Chrome roaches can be used as a feeder, but are more commonly kept as pets. Unlike other roaches, they are a gorgeous blue-gray color as young adults. The coloration changes on older individuals to a typically white-ish with mottled silver, but the vivid orange leg and abdomen coloration remains throughout their life. The beautiful colors are supposed to camouflage them with leaves in their native habitat. The nymphs are equally handsome, sharing the black and white peppered color scheme of their close relative Gyna lurida. The chrome roach is exceptionally easy to keep and breed, but a habitat with a tight lid and a watchful eye are important to prevent the hyper and very flighty adults from escaping. It is said that the adult females are capable of producing 200 nymphs per clutch. These have become one of my favorite species to keep.
