An efficient chick brooder is a fairly expensive item to buy, but the one you are building with these plans can be made for a few dollars. It has a hover area under the roof of 850 square inches. This is enough room to brood 120 chicks according to the Department of Agriculture's recommended space rating of 7 square inches per chick.
Heat is produced by a 100 watt heat lamp that saves you money. Most brooders use a 250 watt heat bulb or heat element. Of course you can use a higher wattage bulb in extreme cold but during the warmer months this is all that is needed to keep your poultry safe and healthy.
The only tools that is needed to build this brooder is a saw, hammer, drill, and screwdriver.
